Frequently asked questions

Why choose to be mindful?

Mindfulness calls for us to give attention to the present moment, on purpose. In doing so, the mind can be calmed and those thoughts, which cause us to 'suffer' from stress, anxiety, or depression - what if, if only, or why me - become less troublesome. Being in the present moment, we can witness that we are okay, and that this moment is acceptable to us and one to be grateful for.

"Other than what you are thinking and believing in this moment are you okay? Enquire"

Byron Katie - https://thework.com/

We can practice mindfulness throughout our day, in particular with those tasks, which we may have noticed we do mindlessly, such as brushing our teeth, making a cup of tea, getting to and from work, or boiling the kettle. Bringing presence to these tasks brings a richer experience to our lives, where we are conscious of what we are doing and what is happening around us.

As Jon Kabat-Zin (the founder of Mindfulness in the West) says: "Like it or not, this moment is all we really have to work with. Yet we all too easily conduct our lives as if forgetting momentarily that we are here, where we already are, and that we are in what we are already in. In every moment, we find ourselves at the crossroads of the here and now, but when the cloud of forgetfulness over where we are now sets in, in that very moment we get lost. 'Now what?' becomes a real problem. By lost, I mean that we momentarily lose touch with ourselves and with the full extent of our possibilities. Instead, we fall into a robotlike way of seeing, thinking and doing. We break contact with what is deepest in ourselves and affords us our greatest opportunities for creativity, learning and growth. If we do not pay attention, those clouded moments can become most of our lives." https://jonkabat-zinn.com/about/jon-kabat-zinn/

What are the benefits of meditation?

Meditation is the ideal practice in which to be mindful, as it calls upon us to be here now, fully. Sitting with the eyes closed, or the gaze lowered, we pay attention to the breath, letting thoughts pass on by.

When we first start to meditate, there will likely be frustration as the mind pulls our attention into thoughts, again and again. This is natural, we will never stop the mind from thinking, it's its job. However, through practice and commitment to meditate daily, we begin to witness a quietening of the mind and a stillness, which arises within our being. It is in this state of being where we can experience peace.

Often, we have preconceived ideas about what meditation is and is not and it is easier to believe those ideas, rather than change one's mind. However, anyone who has meditated for any length of time will tell you of their altered state of mind, and how the experience of life has changed. When we raise our state of consciousness, we raise our experience of life.
